Summer School

Summer Applications

To apply for financial aid during the summer term, you will need to submit an NC State summer financial aid application. *You should not complete the summer application until you have registered for your summer classes.*

Eligibility

To be considered for assistance during the summer sessions, you must:

  • Have both a 2010-11 and a 2011-12 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file(If you have not already done so and are enrolling in Summer I/10 week 2011).
  • Submit the summer financial aid application (Available by mid-March).
  • Be enrolled in a degree program (not a visiting student at NC State).
  • Have already registered for summer courses at NC State.
  • Be enrolled at least half-time (undergrads – 6 hour for any session, grad students – 3 hours for any session)

Sources of Aid

Our financial aid resources for the summer sessions are limited and will consist primarily of Pell grants (for eligible undergraduates) and/or student loans.  All students are subject to the annual loan limits.  If you have already borrowed the maximum amount during the academic year, you will need to consider other options for summer funding.  Alternative sources of aid include PLUS loans or alternative loans.  If you expect to move to the next grade level and therefore have additional loan eligibility, please notify your counselor.

Summer Disbursements

Summer financial aid funds will not be disbursed until the evening of the third day of classes for each term (after your enrollment for each term has been confirmed).  For first session, aid funds will disburse to your student account with the Cashier's Office on or after 5/26 and for second session aid funds will disburse to your student account with the Cashier's Office on or after 7/6. **Please note that summer session disbursements will NOT occur on the first day of class as they do during the fall/spring terms. Refer to disbursement dates above; refunds are typically received 2-3 days after disbursement.

Expenses

Refer to the Universty Cashier's Office for summer tuition rates.

Enrollment

Your financial aid is based on the number of hours you tell us you are taking; therefore you should submit the Summer Financial Aid application ONLY after you have already registered for your summer courses.  If your enrollment plans change (you add or drop hours, you change from one session to another), you must contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid immediately to have your eligibility re-evaluated.

Deadlines

The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid must have a complete application on file by the following dates to award you summer aid:

  • Attending first session only: May 16
  • Attending both sessions: May 16
  • Attending second session only: June 1

**No summer applications will be accepted or processed after these dates**

If you have not already submitted a FAFSA, you must complete one before your eligibility for a student loan can be determined.  The FAFSA may take several weeks to process and for the results to be sent to NC State.  Therefore, you must have a FAFSA on file considerably earlier than the deadlines posted above.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

You must meet the conditions of the Policy on Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid Eligibility to be eligible for further financial aid.  If you do not meet the conditions of this policy as of the end of the spring semester, you will be denied aid for both sessions of summer school as well as for the following academic year. View the Summer Conditions and Responsibilities of Award Acceptance for more information.
