BrioQuery OCE's

Open Catalog Extensions (OCE's)

Open Catalog Extensions are small files that preserve connection information for quick and easy access to data sources. OCE’s store information such as the database you’re connecting to and the connection software you use to connect to it.

OCE’s are particularly useful for new database users, or for people who log on to more than one database. Instead of needing to remember (or even know) the connection information and re-enter it each time you log on to a new or different database, you can simply select an OCE from a list and type your user ID and password. The same OCE can be distributed to many users, even across desktop platforms.

Standard OCE's

The following standard OCE's have been defined by ACS to give users an easy access to the databases they use most often. The OCE's include one or more databases which are commonly used together in a query.

In the matrix table below, find the database(s) which will be needed in the query and then find the corresponding OCE which includes these database(s). For example if the query needs FAS and PICS data in a query, the FASPICS.OCE would be used. Once the OCE is determined, the user selects DataModel/Select Open Catalog from the menu bar in BrioQuery and then highlights the correct OCE to logon with. See the How to Guide for initiating a query.

Custom OCE's

If a standard OCE does not include the database which is needed for a query, a custom OCE can be created using the following steps:

  1. From the BrioQuery menu bar, select the DataModel/Select Open Catalog option.
  2. In the Open Catalog Extension panel, highlight the OCE which best matches the databases needed for the query and click the Modify button.
  3. In the Server Chooser panel, leave the defaulted values and click the OK button.
  4. In the Open Client Host Logon panel, enter your user ID and password, enter acs_dds in the Host field, leave the other field defaults, and click the OK button.
  5. In the Open Client Database Logon panel, the standard databases which are used with this OCE are listed. Leave these databases; add a comma after the last database listed and then add the database which is needed for the query. More than one database can be added.
  6. In the Open Catalog Definition panel, leave the defaults and click the OK button.
  7. In the Save Open Catalog panel, click the Cancel button to avoid replacing the standard OCE.
NOTE: If this custom OCE is going to be used again, the file name can be changed and saved in a different directory.
  8. Now select the DataModel/Table Catalog from the menu bar and the new database views will be included.
