NCSU Health Insurance Requirement

A "hard waiver" student health insurance plan for all 16 campuses of UNC system became effective during the 2010-2011 academic year. The University plan is a very affordable health insurance plan with robust benefits.

In general, undergraduates enrolled in 6+ credit hours and graduate students in 1+ credit hours who are in a degree-seeking program are required to purchase the University-sponsored plan unless they show evidence of an existing creditable health insurance policy, or buy their own health insurance policy outside the University. Graduate Research and Teaching Assistants, as well as Fellows, are covered under the Graduate Student Support Plan.

Students who do not go online to waive out, or submit verifiable health insurance information are enrolled automatically in the University sponsored plan and are billed each semester. The premium counts in the "cost of attendance" used for financial aid consideration.

Students with an existing creditable health insurance policy are able to waive out of the University plan easily and quickly on-line. Students who are already covered by an insurance policy (i.e. through parent plans, family plans, employer-sponsored plans, or student health insurance), submit their insurance policy number for verification through a secure website at http://studentinsurance.com. The charge is removed from the student's bill once their policy is verified.

More information on the benefits and waiver process is available on the NCSU Student Health Web site at http://healthcenter.ncsu.edu/insurance/.
