Summer 2002 Explanation of Tuition and Required Fees

Tuition: Receipts for tuition are used to defray a part of the total cost of instruction and other academic expenses. The annual undergraduate rate is $2,328  for North Carolina residents and $12,320 for nonresidents.  The annual graduate rate is $2,511 for North Carolina residents and $12,822 for nonresidents. 

Required Fees
Required fees must be paid by all students.  Students are entitled to the services, facilities, and programs offered by the Student Center, Health Services, Physical Education Department, and Athletics Department. An itemization of required fees can be provided upon request.

Education and Technology Fee - This academic fee of $320 is used by colleges and schools to equip and operate computing and scientific laboratories which supplement classroom instruction. This fee replaces the computer and laboratory course fees.

Intercollegiate Athletics Fee - This fee of $84 is turned over in full to the Department of Athletics in partial support of the intercollegiate athletic program.

Health Services Fee - This fee of $179 is taken into the University's budgeted receipts to defray the cost of operating the Student Health Services and the Counseling Center.

Physical Education and Recreational Sports Program Fee - This fee of $58 is used to defray the cost of operating and maintaining the intramural recreational sports program and other physical education programs.

Student Government Fee - This fee of $8.85 is allocated to the Student Government for distribution to campus organizations for activities that they deem are in the best interest of the student body.

Student Handbook Fee - This fee of $1.50 is collected to defray the cost of producing The North Carolina State University Student Handbook.

Student Publications Fee - This fee of $16.50 is used to defray the cost of the various campus-wide student publications. At present, these include two student newspapers, a yearbook, a radio station, and The Windhover, a literary magazine.

School Fee - This fee of $5 for undergraduates and $16 for graduate students is collected for use by the student body to support student activities of each of the various schools.

Student Legal Services Fee - This fee of $9 funds the student legal services program which offers legal services to all students.

Student Telephonic Registration Fee - This fee of $4 partially funds the touchtone Telephonic Registration Access to Computerized Scheduling (TRACS).

Transit System Fee - This fee of $74 partially funds the campus transit system.

University Student Center Fee - This fee of $136.20 supports the operations, activities, and programs offered by the University Student Center.

Reserve - This fee of $.15 serves as a contingency against unanticipated expense involving student programs.

Gymnasium Debt Service Fee - This $15 fee is pledged to retire bonds issued for construction of Carmichael Gymnasium.

Witherspoon Student Center Debt Service Fee - This $14.55 fee is pledged to retire bonds issued for construction of the Witherspoon Student Center.

Student Health Services Debt Services Fee - This $28 fee is pledged to retire bonds issued for construction of the new student health services facility.

Student Center Repairs - This fee of $9.45 supports the repairs and renovations to the University Student Centers.

Union Activities Board - This fee of $10.80 supports the programs offered by the UAB.

Transfer Student Orientation Fee and New Student Orientation Fee - This one time fee of $45 is charged to transfer students and new students who enter during the Spring semester.  This is a mandatory fee that all enrolled students are billed, whether they attend orientation or not.

New Student Orientation Fee - This one time fee of $115 is charged to students who enter during the Fall semester. This is a mandatory fee that all enrolled students are billed, whether they attend orientation or not.

Other
International Orientation Fee - This one time fee of $40 is charged to all international students during their first semester of enrollment.

Late Registration Fee - The late registration fee is $35. Late registration starts December 6, 2001 and ends January 18, 2002 at 5:00 pm.  The late late registration fee is $100 after January 18, 2002.
