Introduction to Cost Accounting Standards  (Level - Basic)

This workshop is available for campus personnel who are involved with Contract and Grant administration, both pre-award and post-award functions. This would include College Business/Research Officers and their staff. This introductory course is divided into two class sessions. 

This workshop will provide in-depth information on the following topics:

Session 1:

  • Review of the Cost Accounting Standards and their Applicability
  • Colleges' Roles and Responsibilities
  • Cost Allocation: Direct vs. Indirect
  • Unlike Circumstances - Risk Areas
  • Equipment Issues

Session 2:

  • Facilities and Administrative Costs Rate
  • Judgement Criteria and process
  • Invalid Arguments
  • Written Justifications on "Unlike Circumstances"
  • Case Studies

Format:  Lecture, group discussion and case studies

Prerequisites: Should have basic knowledge about research administration at NCSU. Recommend being in a Research Administration position at least 6 months prior to attending.

Advanced Preparation:  None

Cost Accounting Standards workshops are available to Faculty upon request by the respective College.  The agenda will differ from that noted above. 

The Office of Contracts and Grants - North Carolina State University is not a registered Continuing Professional Education sponsor with the North Carolina State Board of CPA Examiners.  CPAs may claim credit for courses offered by sponsors not registered with the Board. However, each CPA must exercise judgment in selecting courses and claiming credit for only those courses that contribute to the CPA's professional competence and meet the standards found in 21 NCAC 8G .0400.
