Copyright intellectual property may
include textbooks, manuscripts, scholarly works, fixed lecture notes,
distance learning education materials not falling into one of the
other categories of the UNC-Office of the President "Copyright Use
and Ownership" policy, works of art or design, musical scores, poems,
films, videos, audio recordings, or other works of the kind that
have historically been deemed in academic communities to be the
property of their creator. Copyright intellectual property must
be disclosed to the "Office of Technology Transfer" (OTT) and the
University's Copyright Committee before the intellectual property
is made available for sale. OTT works with outside counsel to register
the University-owned copyrights (if needed), process formal agreements
with the creator and the campus department, and represents the University
in negotiating a licensing contract for University-owned copyrights.
All royalties from the University-owned copyrights are receipted
by the OTT. OTT distributes the agreed upon royalty share (currently
60%) to the creator.
