Technology Coverage
Gartner and its 700 analysts publish research on areas of information technology that ranges from desktop PCs to the real-time enterprise and every issue in between. Gartner research helps define how technology drives the business, can be leveraged to assist organizations with their business goals and shapes decision making within companies.
How to Get the Most from Gartner
From the home page you can access all Gartner research. The In the News section analyzes the impact current events have on business. Featured Research focuses on hot technology topics.
Gartner Weblogs are online discussion forums moderated by a Gartner analyst. Gartner users are encouraged to participate and post comments. Focus Areas are dedicated pages that present news, analysis, education, and key issues for 27 topics.
There are additional research sections on the home page as well as links to Search, Advanced Search, Alerts and Browse. A brief overview of each function follows, and additional instruction is available by clicking the Help link.
SEARCH BASICS
"AND" is the default connector between search terms on gartner.com. Entering application development will return documents containing the phrase, as well as documents that have both words used on their own. Use the "OR" and "NOT" operators to structure different types of queries.
Use quotation marks around a phrase to find an exact phrase. For example, "customer relationship management" returns documents with that exact phrase and not the individual words.
If your search has returned too many documents, a quick and easy way to refine your search is to use the Search within current results function. Wireless returns the maximum 500 documents, which may be far too many to review. Choosing Search within current results then entering the search term "retail banking" narrows the number of returned documents.
Don't forget to use Advanced Search to restrict your search by several criteria, such as date range, region, industry, topic and category type. A link to Advanced Search is located at the top of every gartner.com page and every Search Results page.
AUTOMATED WEB ALERTS FOR RESEARCH
The best way to stay on top of new research in your area of interest is to set up a Web Alert. From the home page, click on the Create Alerts link on the upper right of the page. Web Alerts can be based on a term, analyst name or phrase. Follow these steps:
- Choose a name for your Alert, for example, John Smith Research or CRM.
- Select filters, such as the name of the analyst or keywords. Be sure to enclose any names or phrases in quotation marks.
- Choose the delivery method Online only, and daily, your Alerts box will receive any new research Gartner publishes that matches your criteria. (due to the University access setup, delivery is limited to Online only)
Once an Alert is created, the number of documents in your Alerts is displayed on the home page.
BROWSE FOR RESEARCH
If you don’t have a specific search term or keyword in mind, use Browse to explore the complete research database. Browse is located on the upper right of every gartner.com page. In Browse, you can locate research by Topic, Author, and Date. Also use Search within current results to find targeted research within a Browse category.
