NC State Expectations of Courts and e-Discovery |
Alterations to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure at the end of 2006 changed the ballgame for universities with regard to preparing and presenting electronically stored information as evidence. Changes included ‘automatic disclosure’ obligations, the content to be preserved and protected, and document discovery for court proceedings. Preservation of all data (whether or not it is “reasonably accessible”) is required as soon as you can reasonably foresee or anticipate a claim or legal action may occur! This means that (often long before) litigation is initiated, any records (in paper or electronic formats) potential action must be preserved and not destroyed until released by our University Counsel. This session will talk about litigation holds, e-discovery and preservation of electronically stored information as it relates to the university. |

NC State - OIT - Security and Compliance |
NC State Federated Identity Management |
As more and more web-based services become available in North Carolina, it is not feasible nor desirable to create and manage user ids per each Web-based service. A more scalable solution is needed to create or utilize a federated identity management trust and allow service providers to use the existing identity management systems of organizations that need access to their online services. The NC Trust Pilot project was recently formed among several institutions, including NCSU, MCNC, and others. It will create a Federation to test web resource sharing for the K-20 organizations throughout the state of North Carolina. The NC Trust Federation Pilot will consist of various K-20 identity providers (universities, community colleges, LEAs, etc.) and online service providers (Virtual Computing Lab, NC Live, etc.). Participants will gain access to online resources using their usernames and passwords as assigned by their home organizations. Service providers will be able to provide authenticated access to their resources by utilizing the identity management systems of the participants. The underlying technology enabling the pilot is Shibboleth: a standards based, open source software package for web single sign-on across or within organizational boundaries. It allows sites to make informed authorization decisions for individual access of protected online resources in a privacy-preserving manner, and each site is able to manage its own login / password information. This talk will provide a brief overview of the ongoing NC Trust pilot project. |
