2007 University Awards for Excellence Winners
The 2007 University Awards for Excellence Luncheon was held on Monday May 21st at the McKimmon Center on NC State’s campus. Forty-six nominees from across the University were honored. At the luncheon, five distinguished employees were named University Awards for Excellence winners. This award recognizes excellence in the areas of outstanding state government service, innovations, public service, safety & heroism, and human relations. Human Resources would like to thank everyone that served on the nomination committee, served as ticket coordinators and those that attended the luncheon. The 5 university winners will represent NC State University at the State Employees Award for Excellence program this summer. Good Luck to our 2007 winners!
Kay Yow
Head Coach
Women’s Basketball
On February 5th of this year, our Naismith Hall of Fame coach Kay Yow became only the sixth woman in history to reach 700 career wins. Coach Yow has been fighting a courageous battle against cancer, which intensified this season. Despite her adversity, she continues to impact thousands with her commitment to her team and to helping others. Coach Yow’s game promotion, Hoops for Hope, in its second year raised $43,000 for cancer research and inspired thousands. This season her team defeated #1 ranked Duke and #2 ranked UNC and earned another NCAA invitation. Her story of love and courage has reached around the world. An NC State Technician editorial called her a “legend” and one of our greatest ambassadors. Chancellor Oblinger recently said, “No one in the history of NC State athletics has brought more honor to this University than Kay Yow.”
Kathleen A. Moritz
Administrative Officer
Chancellor’s Office
Kathy exhibits leadership, dedication and outstanding service as a member of the Chancellor’s Office staff. She has a “can do” attitude and sets high standards for every aspect of her work – a commitment reflected in the manner in which she deals with constituents. In making arrangements for honorary degree recipients, Kathy ensures that special visitors leave NC State feeling as though they’ve been treated in a way that reflects the strength and professionalism of the University. Kathy’s commitment extends beyond her position in the Chancellor’s Office. She is frequently called upon to serve in a “meet and greet role” during university events and willingly serves as Unit Coordinator for the State Employees Combined Campaign. Kathy possesses all the characteristics that make her an exemplary employee.
Ann M. Turner
Customer Service Representative
Financial Services Division
Ann primarily deals with students and their related financial transactions with the University. While students generally do not like to pay money or deal with financial problems, many students come to the office and ask for "Miss Ann", or "Mama Turner". As pointed out in a “Technician” article, Ann's influence is felt within the department as well as outside. She is a mentor to younger workers, and exemplifies the concept of dedication to her work and superior customer service. More than a job, she sees her employment at NC State as an opportunity to serve others. She doesn't see customer service as a set of rules to be learned, rather she seeks to treat people the way they should be treated, and outstanding customer satisfaction is the result.
Elizabeth M. Deakle
Secretary
Air Force ROTC
Look no further than Beth Deakle as the best choice for this year’s Award for Excellence. She has become the heartbeat of the Air Force ROTC department where she has systematically identified ways to optimize every facet of administration and operation. Beth’s quest for excellence is not simply limited to duties she performs, but is realized in the lives and improved operations of the programs around her. Her ability to assess the unknown, plunge in and immediately implement improved operations is consistently the norm. Beth’s respect, sincerity and kindness to others have proven infectious to everyone.
Nancy J. Hutchinson
Nurse Practitioner
Student Health Service
Nancy has always been known for her efficiency, good judgment and ability to work well with others. This year she was instrumental in arranging an alternative spring break for students and medical personnel, who provided free medical clinic care to a poor community in Mexico. This project involved an extraordinary amount of time and energy, most of which occurred outside her regular work hours. As chair of the Medical Records Committee, Nancy has been directly involved in the selection of the Health Center’s new electronic medical record system. Nancy’s passion and concern for the health of others is evident in her commitment to make a difference.
