Service & Retirement Awards

Throughout the year, NC State employees are recognized for achievements, accomplishments, and service.

Service Awards

The Service Awards Program was created to provide recognition to staff employees for their years of service to the University. All permanent SPA employees are eligible to receive a service award every 5 years. Staff employees are presented with their awards by their respective departments in the month in which they are eligible. Once eligible for a service award, the college/unit coordinator will send instructions to the employee for ordering service award gifts.

The University Benefits Office partners with the NC State Bookstores to provide gifts for service award recipients.

University-level winners are granted an additional 8 hours of time off and a $250 check.

Retirement Certificates

As a token of appreciation, departments may wish to present a retiring employee with a certificate signed by the Governor of North Carolina and NC State Chancellor. To be eligible, retiring university employees must have at least 10 years of state service. Departments should complete and submit both the Request for State Retirement Certificate Form and Interdepartmental Transfer Invoice together, to the University Benefits Office for prompt processing. Certificates are available within 4-6 weeks after both documents are received in the Benefits Office.

The John R. Larkins Award is presented each year to a North Carolina state government employee who best exemplifies the deeds of John R. State Employee Incentive Bonus Program

The Office of State Personnel administers an Employee Incentive Bonus Program to encourage employees to share new and creative ideas for improving state government. A Review Committee qualified to judge the merits of the ideas evaluates employee suggestions.

Any full-time, part-time or temporary state employee who receives a paycheck issued by the state or is a member of a qualified State of NC Retirement System is eligible. Suitable suggestions include improvements to safety, costs, productivity, efficiency, energy resources, service to the public, and employee morale.

Awards to employees whose ideas are implemented may be monetary or non-monetary. Possible awards include up to 3 days of special leave with pay and a certificate. When a suggestion results in monetary savings to the state, a monetary award of 20% of the annual savings from the first year the suggestion is in place will be granted to the employee(s) who submitted the improvement idea. (The award is up to a limit of $20,000 for an individual or up to$100,000 total for a team.)

The State Employee Incentive Bonus Program website provides complete details on the program including a suggestion form and further examples.
