Ombudsman / Ombuds Services

Do you have a workplace-related concern that you want to discuss with someone in confidence? Do you want --

  • Someone to talk to and reality-check your perceptions of a workplace situation?
  • Suggestions on how to handle a difficult discussion with an administrator, immediate supervisor, colleague, or subordinate?
  • Strategies to address workplace concerns informally and discreetly?
  • A better understanding of University policies that may affect you?
  • An understanding of whether your concerns might warrant a formal complaint or grievance?
  • Access to mediation services that can help willing participants identify mutually- satisfying resolutions, consistent with each participant’s interests and without formal complaint proceedings?
  • Confidential resources such as referrals and assessments for personal issues and stresses that may be affecting an individual’s work life – such as family challenges, substance abuse concerns, personal financial and legal questions, or mental and physical health issues?

If so, please contact a Faculty / Staff Relations consultant in HR’s Employee Relations department.

We can provide flexible meeting times, and locations, for your convenience and confidentiality.

Our programs and services are designed to help the University maintain effective, satisfying, and productive work environments for faculty and staff in their various roles as employees, colleagues, co-workers, supervisors, and administrators.

We provide confidential, neutral, customized facilitation services, including “ombuds” capacity, to address a wide range of workplace concerns, including, but not limited to, issues related to staff performance appraisals and faculty reappointment, promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review.

Our HR consultants serve as facilitators, rather than arbitrators or advocates for any particular party. We strive to provide guidance toward equitable, defensible outcomes and treatment of all individuals or parties involved in any dispute or concern raised. We promote the understanding and appropriate application of University policies and regulations, as well as due process and personal responsibility.

Consultations and initial discussions are handled with the full extent of confidentiality afforded under State law.
