Types of Leave
The University offers its employees a variety of leave options. Some are offered as paid leave; others are unpaid. Employment status also affects the availability of leave. Most types of leave are offered to permanent or probationary employees, but you should see the individual leave policy to determine if you are eligible.
- Adverse Weather Leave - Provides leave in the event of adverse weather or other emergency situations; this time must be made up
- Annual Leave/Vacation - Encourages employees to take time to renew themselves physically and mentally; covers absences due to personal obligations, adverse weather conditions, and, in lieu of sick leave, illness in the immediate family
- Civil Leave - Offers paid time off for jury duty, or if you are subpoenaed to testify in court
- Community Service Leave - Provides paid time off for parental involvement in a child's school; voluntary involvement in community service organization; or tutoring or mentoring in a school
- Educational Leave - Allows employee to take an extended leave to participate in career-related study based on certain criteria
- Employee Transfer - Provides up to 3 days of paid leave for employees who are transferred to another duty station, under set situations
- Family Illness - Provides an extension of the benefits provided under the Family and Medical Leave Policy
- Family and Medical - Provides unpaid leave to care for a newborn or an adopted or foster child (proof is required); care for a child, spouse, or parent with a serious health condition; or for a personal serious health condition
- Holidays - Provides employees with paid leave for specific holidays, which are listed each year
- Leave without Pay - Offers permanent and part-time employees time without pay for a variety of reasons
- Maternity Leave - Falls under Family and Medical Leave
- Military Leave - Grants time for certain periods of service in the uniformed services
- Scholarly Leave Off Campus - It is essential that faculty members maintain high competence as professionals in their fields and keep abreast of the most recent developments in their special areas of scholarly interest; therefore, the administration encourages the colleges and departments to foster, when possible, scholarly assignments off campus for their faculty members at intervals of about seven years.
- Sick Leave - Allows an employee to recover from personal illness, injury, or disability that prevents performance of usual duties
- Voluntary Shared Leave - Allows an employee to assist another state employee affected by a personal or immediate family member's medical condition
