Licensing Basics

WHAT ARE NC STATE’S TRADEMARKS?

A NC State trademark is any mark, logo, symbol, nickname, letter(s), word or derivative that can be associated with NC State and can be distinguished from those of other institutions or entities.  Some examples of NC State trademarks are:  North Carolina State University, NC State, NCSU, Wolfpack, The Strutting Wolf, the Block S logo, the University Seal, etc.  (Trademarks)

NC State trademarks are the property of North Carolina State University.  All uses, either print or electronic, must be approved in advance by the NC State Trademark Licensing Office.  Unauthorized use of NC State’s trademarks is prohibited.  The University, in cooperation with our licensing agent, Licensing Resource Group (LRG), vigorously enforces our trademark rights.

WHO NEEDS TO BE LICENSED?

Anyone that uses the name or marks of NC State for a commercial purpose must be licensed.  Manufacturers of products bearing NC State marks are required to pay an 8% royalty on the wholesale price of the product.

NC State trademark use in advertisements, motion pictures, etc. also requires licensing approval and a payment of a licensing fee.  NC State trademark use in the traditional news media is not subject to licensing fees.
