Trademark Usage

University Departments

Internal Use:  For university use such as letterhead, brochures, reports, etc., there is no licensing approval required.  However, the trademarks may not be altered and should be reproduced using a high quality master ditigal image.   These ditigal images can be obtained by contacting the Trademark Licensing Office at 515-2146.

External Use:  University departments, with permission of the Licensing Director, may use university marks to raise funds for their own organization or charitable support.  Items purchased for such purposes must be acquired from licensees and have the design artwork approved by the NC State Licensing Office (licensed vendors will submit the artwork for you).   The licensee or organization will be required to pay royalties on the product in such cases.  The trademarks should not be altered.  Alteration of the trademarks may dilute them and weaken their protection.

Student Groups

Officially recognized student groups may purchase merchandise bearing University marks, but all such purchases must include the group's identification on the product and must be purchased from licensed manufacturers.  A link to Local Printers that have expressed a willingness to produce special-order merchandise for campus groups is provided.  Prior to purchase, the organization must submit a Trademark Use Request Form, accompanied by the proposed design, to the Trademark Licensing Director for advance approval.  All merchandise purchased for student members of the organization will be exempt from royalties.  Merchandise for resale, to anyone else, even as a fundraiser for charity, will require royalties to be paid by the manufacturer.   The trademarks should not be altered.  Alteration of the trademarks may dilute them and weaken their protection.

Student groups must also obtain a Solicitation Permit from the Student Organization Resource Center located at 1201 Talley Student Center for on-campus sales.

Unauthorized Use

The NC State Trademark Licensing Office works in cooperation with the Licensing Resource Group and law enforcement agencies to enforce the University’s trademark rights. The University is committed to protecting NC State’s trademarks and the reputation they represent.  No use of NC State trademarks is permitted without written consent of the NC State Trademark Licensing Office.  Any information regarding possible trademark infringement should be reported to Jack Landrigan (jack@lrgusa.com) at the Licensing Resource Group, (616) 395-0676 ext. 111, or NC State Licensing Director Cindy Sears (cindy_sears@ncsu.edu) (919) 515-2146.
