March minutes were approved.
Special Discussion - The MIME types committee gave a presentation for standardizing data types on
campus. The presentation can be found on the web at
http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/cep/oed/gc/wiebe/mime-com2.html. Bill Willis asked that the
committee provide more specific information...to recommend a particular method for each file type.
It was also noted that shareware didnt have to be used if other software packages were more
beneficial and that a site license could be purchased if needed. It was recommended that the MIME
TYPE recommendations list be placed where it will be maintained and can be printed and ensure
that our customers have tools available to effectively do their job.
World Wide Web Committee - No report.
Data and Data Access Standards - Ron Melbourne reported that the data extracts were being looked
at and will be detailed and refined. He also noted that the info repository should be moved to a
different level on the web possibly under computer resources.
User Authentication - Single name password returned to committee for more clarification.
It was reported that a new search engine "Verity" will be available on the campus web in a few
weeks.
Communication - Reported that 80% of the closets had been rekeyed for the 911 system. It was noted
that some of the closet doors didnt have stickers to notify of the rekeying but at the time of this
report the process was going much smoother. Also there are a number of buildings wired before the
Cat5 standard and it was noted that the correct cables should be stocked. There was a
recommendation made to color code the different wires. Brian Kemerait noted that he wants closets
to be standardized.
Electronic Mail - It was reported that there will be an IMAP server running in approximately one
month. This committee will probably be re-charged at the September meeting.
Network rate assessments will go to academic and administrative councils. Proposed
implementation to be phased in over the next year. This will lower the cost to the university but it
will be a question of who buys what. Once management has reviewed they will visit departments.
This rate will be per desktop (per port) not by IP number as long as you have a switching device. It
was requested that a presentation be made to the standards committee even though it is not a
standards issue but rather a monetary issued.
Target Delivery - no specific report.
IRMC & UNC GA update - It was reported that they are moving from the State Controllers Office
to Commerce Department. The critical issue is budgeting for year 2000. It is beginning to appear that
there will be funds available. Bill recommended that we do assessments to determine whether we
are year 2000 compliant. IRMC approved PDF as official way to distribute non-editable
publications. It was noted that PDF will be utilized for dissertation.
Next Meeting schedule for September 17, 1997.
