University Information Technology Committee Charge

The University Information Technology Standards Committee has been charged with developing and facilitating the development of a campus-wide strategy that will continue to improve the University’s delivery of Information Technology (IT) services to the campus.  It was formed originally  in 1992 by the Provost and the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business as the North Carolina State University Computing Standards Committee (UCSC).The Committee reviews current implementation of computing technology, recommends appropriate University-wide computing standards to maintain IT currency on the campus, and serves as primary communication liaisons between the campus' colleges/schools and the central IT service providers. University campus departments, schools, and colleges are "free to choose" the computing hardware and software that best meets their needs consistent within the approved baseline standards.

Co-chaired by the Vice Provost for Information Technology and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Resource Management and Information Systems, the Committee is composed of appointed representatives from the ten academic Colleges/School; Assistant Director of NC State Libraries-for Computing Support; and representatives designated to represent the faculty and students. Ex-officio, non-voting, members of the Committee include:

FROM Information Technology (academic):

FROM Resource Management and Information Systems (administrative):

These representatives review, and, where appropriate, recommend best practices and standards in the areas of:

  1. Data and Data Access standards to permit timely, uniform, and ready access to University information by all authorized campus units,
  2. Network infrastructure and protocol standards that empower innovation and creativity in research, learning, and administration,
  3. User identification, password, and security standards which provide user friendly access but do not compromise data security and privacy rules and regulations,
  4. Core productivity tools desktop standards which enable the ubiquitous exchange of information and conduct of business allowing all campus units to participate and share in an integrated information systems environment,
  5. Uniform/integrated help desk services to provide more efficient and effective handling of computing problems with limited resources, and
  6. Other campus-wide computing issues as required.

The Committee's recommendations are presented to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business, and when appropriate, to the Chancellor, for final approval and implementation.
