Overview:

October minutes were approved. There were presentations from the Colleges of Education & Psychology and Management. The WWW Implementation Subcommittee presented a preliminary report which outlined top level Web menus; these will be implemented December 1. A Data and Data Access Standards handout was distributed for review at next meeting. There was nothing new to report regarding Data Communication Protocols or Electronic Mail. Steve Keto and Bill Willis recommended that the DCE be a joint committee between the Computing Center and Budgets & Administrative systems, rather than a sub-committee of this committee. Recommendations regarding the Desktop Standards Subcommittee handout should be sent to Michael Fox by November 23. There was nothing new regarding IRMC or UNC-GA. Next meeting is Wednesday, January 18.

Discussion Detail:

  1. The October, 1994 minutes were unanimously approved.
  2. Presentations: Bill Ballenger presented the College of Education & Psychology computing set-up, and Dan Steen presented the College of Management; both had handouts.

Next meeting: College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (Jay Bragg) and College of Humanities & Social Sciences (Joe Flowers).

  3. WWW Implementation Committee: Co-chairs Sherry Kappel and Molly Munro presented a preliminary report. The front page banner (graphic) recommendations were rendered irrelevant because University Relations has taken control of this issue. Harry Nicholos was accepted as primary web coordinator for NCSU, under direction of the Implementation Committee. The top-level menus were accepted with minor changes for implementation December 1, although the Administrative Information page will need revision. The University Standards committee felt there was no need for the memo requesting approval of menus by responsible administrators; however, committee members should run the menus by their own administrators for approval. Last, it was suggested that the guidelines include a strong suggestion regarding a standardized footer.
  4. Data and Data Access Standards: Ron Melbourne distributed a handout for review at the next meeting. It was noted that the focus is on a unique, unchanging identifier for each user.
  5. Data Communication Protocols: Nothing to report.
  6. Electronic Mail: Nothing to report.
  7. User Authentication/DCE: Steve Keto and Bill Willis had reviewed the charge and determined that an implementation team should be developed between the Computing Center and Budgets & Administrative Systems that can make standards recommendations to the University Standards Committee, rather than being a sub-committee.
  8. Technology (hardware and software) Standards: Michael Fox provided a handout from the spin-off Desktop Standards Subcommittee for review. It was requested that someone from Administrative Computing Services be put on committee. Discussion centered around the extent to which these standards are needed, and whether they will add or reduce bureaucracy. Suggestions included adding checkpoints for purchases, and letting people know that certain things aren't supported -- the network is too big to let people pick the cheapest items at random. Committee members should send Michael recommendations regarding the handout by November 23 (one week).
  9. IRMC and UNC-GA: Nothing new to report.

Next meeting is Wednesday, January 18.
