Freshman Admission
Freshman admission to NC State is competitive. Over 15,000 applications were received for a 2006 freshman class of 4,400 students. Admission decisions are based primarily on the evaluation of the high school record, including the level and difficulty of the courses taken, the overall grade point average, rank in class, and scores on the SAT or ACT. Extracurricular involvement and leadership and many other factors are also considered. Information about average
freshman grades and SAT scores for admitted students can be found in our Admission Facts document. Additional information about admissions criteria and competition is available on our Freshman Admission Process webpage.
To be considered for freshman admission applicants must have a high school diploma or its equivalent and satisfy the UNC-system Minimum Course Requirements (MCR)*. We welcome applications from non-public, home-schooled and out-of-state students. The requirements for the admission of out-of-state, non-public and home schooled students are the same as for any other freshman applicant.
Students apply for admission to specific academic programs at NC State University. Applicants provide a first and second choice on the
application for specific majors or, if they have only a general idea of an area
of interest, they can indicate the undeclared option in the college of their
choice. If an applicant is uncertain about an interest area they can choose the First Year
College, where they will explore the many majors and career opportunities offered
at NC State and choose a major by the sophomore year. Students can choose to
minor in one or more fields after they are enrolled. More information about majors and minors is available on NC State's Virtual Advising website.
International Freshman Admission
Applicants who are not United States citizens or permanent residents (hold a "Green Card") must apply online. All international students must prove English proficiency to be considered for
admission. Furthermore, the University does not have any financial aid available
for international students. All international applicants must be able to provide
documentation indicating the availability of funds for each year of study in
order to meet government requirements for financial support.
Additional information is available on our web pages for international students.
* MCR is not a requirement for students who graduate high school outside the United States or for applicants 24 years of age or older.
