The university makes every effort to provide surroundings that are conducive to intellectual and personal growth. In addition, a wide variety of athletic, cultural and social opportunities are available to students. Through the services and activities affiliated with campus life, as well as through extracurricular organizations and functions, students at NC State can acquire experience in group leadership and community living to supplement and enrich their education.
Arts
NC State’s campus is enriched with critically acclaimed theater, dance, visual arts, and music programs. NCSU Center Stage is a performing arts series that showcases a mix of jazz, dance, world music, comedy and theater. University Theater is a volunteer student theater that presents four shows a year. The Dance Program showcases NC State’s nationally recognized student dance companies. The Music Department offers music course work as well as performances by campus choirs, orchestra, a cappella ensembles, and jazz bands. The Gallery of Art & Design showcases top exhibitions of art, while the Crafts Center offers classes in pottery, photography, fibers, woodworking, glassblowing, and more.
Athletics
There are more than 500 student-athletes who participate in 24 varsity sports on campus. Our athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). A number of our teams consistently win at the conference, division, and national levels. Wolfpack teams have won more than 200 championships during NC State’s storied history.
Campus Cinema
The Campus Cinema presents films to the NC State community ranging from independent works to the latest Hollywood blockbusters. There are also many opportunities to see free movies and sneak previews throughout the year.
Campus Recreation
Campus Recreation provides club sports, outdoor adventures activities, and fitness/wellness programs help you improve yourself – physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.
Diversity
Diversity is an inclusive collection of individuals and groups who bring varied human characteristics, backgrounds, interests and points of view to enrich the university community. NC State University welcomes everyone and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive campus. Students at NC State represent all 50 states and over 100 countries, which brings various cultures, ideas, ethnicities and beliefs to one location in order to create an environment where diversity is a component of academic integrity. Knowledge, discovery, innovation and truth are best achieved when all voices are part of the conversation. Therefore, diversity of ideas and people is central to the academic mission of the university.
NC State University is committed to academic excellence. However, we are equally committed to developing young men and women who can live, work, and lead in a global community. Therefore, we encourage our students to immerse themselves in the diversity at NC State University and to experience other cultures and world views. Diversity programs, multicultural events and activities across the campus and throughout the academic year provide students with the opportunity to learn about various people, places and cultures. The faculty offer over 500 courses that explore cultures, religions, languages, and world views. Diversity education, compassionate campus leaders, and a diverse student body help create and maintain a welcoming and respectful campus community.
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) provides programs to support and aid all minorities in their academic, personal, and cultural development. The African American Cultural Center (AACC) promotes awareness and appreciation for the African American experience through many exhibits, lectures and activities.
Greek Life
There are over 40 Greek letter organizations at NC State University, and four pillars guide each: Leadership, Scholarship, Service, and Sisterhood/Brotherhood. While the fraternal values of each organization are similar at the core, each organization expresses itself through its unique membership. At State, we also have social fraternities and sororities, historically African-American, Native-American, and Latino fraternities and sororities, Greek letter organizations that recruit by academic focus, and those which are formed over common interest such as multiculturalism.
Honorary
University-wide honorary societies include Golden Chain, senior leadership; Thirty and Three, junior leadership; Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta, freshman scholarship; Gamma Beta Phi, scholarship and service; and Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, junior, senior and graduate student scholarship.
National Student Exchange Program
NC State also participates in the National Student Exchange Program which enables students to study at any of more than one hundred other institutions across the country while still enrolled at NC State.
Student Activities
The Department of Campus Activities, a unit of the Division of Student Affairs, encourages and supports the growth and development of the whole student. It is the cornerstone of out-of-class learning.
Student Leadership, Ethics, & Public Service
The Center for Student Leadership, Ethics & Public Service challenges students to exercise their civic responsibility by collaborating with others to make a positive difference for the common good. Through events like the Leadership Development Series, the Alternative Spring Break, and Service Raleigh, the center provides opportunities for students to apply what they learn outside the classroom.
Student Organizations
NC State offers more than 400 student organizations that help students add balance to their lives. Joining organizations provide you the opportunity to meet new people, develop leadership skills and contribute to the campus community.
